Harmattan doesn't only make the weather feel different. Your skin can feel it too.
As humidity drops and the air becomes drier and dustier, the skin may lose moisture more easily. For some people, this shows up as tightness, flaking, rough texture, increased sensitivity or a complexion that suddenly looks dull.
Preparing your skin before these changes become pronounced can make the transition into the dry season considerably easier.
What Happens to Your Skin Barrier?
Your skin barrier helps retain moisture while protecting the skin from external irritants.
When that barrier becomes compromised, transepidermal water loss can increase, meaning water escapes from the skin more readily. Harsh cleansers, excessive exfoliation and overuse of active ingredients can make the problem worse.
This is why the weeks before Harmattan are not necessarily the time to introduce every acid, scrub and brightening product in your bathroom.
Sometimes, your skin needs less aggression and more support.
Should You Change Your Skincare?
Your routine may need to evolve with the season.
A lightweight moisturiser that felt sufficient during more humid months may no longer provide enough support as the air becomes drier.
Depending on your skin type, your provider may recommend introducing more barrier-supportive hydration while reviewing how frequently you use ingredients such as exfoliating acids and retinoids.
Daily sunscreen remains important too. Harmattan does not mean UV exposure disappears.
Professional Hydration Can Also Have a Place
If your skin is already showing signs of dehydration, professional treatments may be considered as part of a broader skin plan.
For suitable clients, treatments such as HydraFacial can provide cleansing, exfoliation and hydration while being customised according to the condition of the skin.
But even a facial should be selected intentionally.
At Flawless Aesthetic Center, we assess your skin before recommending treatment because dry skin, dehydrated skin and a compromised skin barrier are not necessarily the same thing.
Prepare your skin for the season it is entering—not the season it is leaving.
