What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that tightens and lifts the skin of the face through an incision on both sides of the face near the ears and hairline. Tissues beneath the skin are modified to create a natural contour and a smooth, sculpted look as excess skin is removed. The facelift procedure is not intended for shallow or superficial wrinkles or for sun damage – it is geared for patients who want a comprehensive facial rejuvenation treatment that lasts for years.

This procedure is often performed in conjunction with a neck lift. A facelift addresses these age-related changes to your face:

  • Sagging cheeks
  • Jowls
  • Lack of definition at jawline
  • Deepening facial lines, particularly around the nose and mouth

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Recovery is in stages. For the first few days you will rest and apply cooling pads to reduce swelling. After a week, your stitches will likely be removed. The timeline to being presentable in public depends upon the degree of bruising and swelling but typically is about two weeks. However, full recovery with maximum results may take a few months.

What is the Facelift Procedure?

Your surgeon will conduct an in-depth physical exam that includes a detailed facial exam of skin elasticity, bone structure, face shape, fat distribution and other factors.

Your surgeon will outline your complete medical history including any medications you take, allergies you may have and any previous surgery or complications.

Your surgeon will discuss the options open to you as well as your expectations.

On the day of the surgery, you will be given general anesthesia, or in some cases sedation and a local anesthesia depending upon the type of facelift being done.

The two most common types of facelifts are:

  • Traditional. Longer incisions from the temples at the hairline, around the front of your ears.
  • Mini-facelift. A shorter incision that starts in front of your earlobe and follows around the ear.

After you revive from the anesthesia you will be sent home with a list of instructions you will need to follow carefully to speed your recovery.

Facial muscles are tightened if needed.

Underlying tissue is sculpted, and facial skin is tightened.

Excess skin is removed. Sutures are applied.

Incisions are protected with bandages.
